Street trading

Street trading is selling, exposing or offering for sale any article or living thing in a street.

We have adopted Schedule 4 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 to designate the whole borough as either Licensed or Consent Streets for the purposes of Street Trading. The licensed area includes all forecourts, roads, footways, or other areas to which the public have access by fact and without payment.

Street traders must apply for, and be granted, street trading permission by us before they trade in Brentwood. It's an offence to trade without consent and traders without consent will be liable to prosecution.

It's the street trader's responsibility to get permission or consent from the landowner before applying for street trading consent from us.

The following types of Licence or Consent can be issued:

  • Static – for a trader that will trade from the same site on each occasion for the duration of the consent or licence
  • Mobile – traders with a mobile consent or licence must not trade from the vicinity of any one location for more than 1 hour in any one day

Brentwood Market

Brentwood market is on Fridays and Saturdays in the High Street. We encourage a variety of different stalls and aim for no duplication of goods.

Anyone wanting to trade, must apply to do so.
