Business waste

We offer a competitive waste service, with no hidden charges or ties into lengthy contracts. The service is aimed at businesses that want to reduce their costs and promote the environmental policy within their organisation.

Simpler recycling

As part of the Environment Act 2021, from 1 April 2025, all businesses and other non-household premises with ten or more full-time employees must separate paper and card, plastic, glass, metals (cans, tins and foil), and food waste from non-recyclable waste. This saves valuable resources from going to waste and supports the circular economy.

By 31 March 2025, you will need to have arrangements in place for separate waste collections from a licensed waste collection service for all the following materials that your business generates:

  • non-recyclable waste
  • food
  • recycling:
    • glass
    • plastics
    • tins, cans and aerosols
  • paper and card recycling should be kept separate from non-recyclable waste, food and other dry recyclable streams

For all enquiries, email businesswaste@brentwood.gov.uk

Business waste responsibilities

All businesses have responsibilities regarding the proper disposal of waste. Your rubbish, your responsibility. For practical guidance, view the Waste Duty of Care Code of Practice (PDF).

If you ignore your responsibilities, you could face a £300 fixed penalty or fine.

We have produced a leaflet to help local businesses understand their obligations and the legal framework which governs commercial waste.

The leaflet covers:

What to do if you produce waste, including:

  • storage
  • waste removal contracts
  • waste transfer notes (WTN)
  • LoW codes

What to do if you remove waste, including:

  • certificates of registration
  • waste transfer notes (WTN)
  • LoW codes
  • transfrontier shipment notes
